MLB’s three-phased approach ensured efficient coordination of trades through successive buildings, and offsite panelization of wall sections helped expedite project delivery so that the first three buildings could be turned over early for summer occupancy. MLB also constructed three additional Northwood structures during Phase 2 of the project. These three new buildings house 114 students in the same mix of ground-floor and stairway entrance accommodations appearing in the original Northwoods development. The sustainable design features and strategies for these projects include geothermal heating/cooling systems; daylight harvesting; energy-efficient lighting; reuse of existing building sites; and the use of recycled, local, and sustainable-building materials.
Phase 1 involved the construction of two new apartment-style buildings built into the slope along Skidmore’s perimeter. The four-story buildings were tailored especially for sophomores seeking a bit more independence than the traditional residence halls provide. Each unit houses 57 students in 5-person apartments.
In Phase 2, seven new two-story buildings were constructed, each housing 34 students in 4-bedroom apartments. An emphasis was placed on preserving the Village’s community spirit: the buildings, each with a patio, form an oval around a central green space at the community’s center.
We take pride in the way we build quality people and quality buildings, on the bedrock of trust, in all that we do!
